Hounded by energy problems since a devastating storm in 2016 which caused a state-wide blackout, South Australia will soon receive Tesla batteries and solar panels from the state government in a landmark plan to turn houses into a network of energy generators equivalent to a power plant.
It is a fact that Australia is one of the world's largest producers of coal and gas but the incident in the South Australian blackout raised issues.
As of 2016 government data, about 60 percent of electricity generated in Australia is from coal (renewables at 14%) so this is definitely a good news.
The planned network of free solar panels on households will be linked to rechargeable batteries and financed by the sale of excess electricity generated by the network itself, a projected by the Australian government.
It is also home to world's biggest battery (Elon Musk-driven project) to provide electricity for about 30,000 homes.
"We will use people's homes as a way to generate energy for the South Australian grid, with participating households benefiting with significant savings in their energy bills," shares Premier Jay Weatherill said in a statement with Agence France-Presse.There will be an initial trial of 1,100 public housing properties supplied with a 5kW solar panel system each; also powered by a Tesla battery.
The next phase would involve installation of 24,000 more public housing properties. The long-term plan would make it available to more South Australians areas in the next four years while making programs available to open competition in the market.
Meanwhile in the Philippines, our government and local officials might want to look into the matter and use this real-world project as an example we can imitate and apply in our own lands for the benefit of the Filipino people.
