Villar Foundation-DZRH Coastal Clean Up

If you were from Metro Manila and nearby provinces, surely you felt the flooding and other effects of the recent heavy monsoon rains during the first week of August. To further mitigate this catastrophy, the Villar Foundation led by Managing Director Ms. Cynthia Villar, initiated a community clean-up drive of Manila Bay's coastal area.

More specifically at the Las Pinas-Paranaque Critical Habitat & Eco-Tourism Area (LPPCHEA), it stretched from Navotas to Bacoor in Cavite. They were joined by about a thousand volunteers from schools, different NGOs, private and public groups, and even concerned individuals.

The Villar Foundation also signed a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) with the Manila Broadcasting Company (MBC) for the Manila Bay Cleanup Drive. MBC was represented by radio station DZRH.

“The Villar Foundation and DZRH agree that this is a joint cooperative undertaking, but more importantly, it is a major public service activity that shall help contribute to the promotion of a livable, healthier and ecological sustainableManilaBay,” as indicated in the MoA.

The Metro Manila Development Authority (MMDA) estimated that there were about 200 truckloads weighing 500 tons of garbage that piled up along Manila Bay due to the recent typhoons which hit the country including Gener.

“We will continue to support campaigns or drives to protect Manila Bay and neighboring areas including LPPCHEA. At the same, time, we will continue to oppose projects that will cause damage and destruction to the bay and nearby cities,” adds Ms. Cynthia Villar.

Writ of Kalikasan Granted

In a related news, Ms. Cynthia Villar filed a petition for Writ of Kalikasan against the Manila Bay reclamation project last March that is projected to cause more flooding in the area covering Bacoor – Las Piñas – Paranaque coastline of the Manila Bay. The Supreme Court granted her petition and issued a writ of kalikasan the month after.

The petition asked the Supreme Court to stop the Parañaque and Las Piñas Coastal Bay Project because it will result in the destruction of wildlife habitat in the area and expose the residents of the cities of Las Piñas and Parañaque and the municipality of Bacoor and their properties to great risk of flooding.
